4 top causes of obesity

There are several causes of obesity in our society today, and all these pin point to our lifestyle like what we eat and also activity. But first of all I would like us to understand what obesity is.

Obesity is a state whereby an individual has so much body fat which poses great danger to the individual health. And some of the health risks posed by obesity to the individual if measures are not taken to counter the problem includes;

  • - Heart disease
  • - Hypertension
  • - Type 2 diabetes

According to the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 1999-2000, 27.5% of men were obese, and by 2009-2010 the prevalence had increased to 35.5%. Among women , 33.4% were obese in 1999-2000 with no significant change in 2009-2010 (35.8%).

It is very important to know what causes of obesity are, so that we can take precautions and make adjustments that lead to a healthy lifestyle which comes with enormous benefits. There are so many diet plans available out there that promise instant "cure" for obesity and overweight. I believe the paramount means to achieving a healthy weight is through a change of lifestyle and remaining committed to it.

The sad thing and I mean sad, is unless people make a long lasting changes in their lifestyles and consistently choose healthy foods coupled with discipline and exercise, their efforts to achieve a healthy lifestyle may never materialize.


What are the causes of obesity

Let us now look at the causes of obesity and how we can manage obesity, and overweight through change of lifestyle and eating habits. Well obesity occurs or happens due to;

  • 1. Eating habits
  • When you eat more high calorie foods which means, the more excess calories you have get converted to body fats, and the right way to handle this is to lead a active lifestyle and a good example is exercising to help build muscles.

    Whether these calories do come from fat, sugar, protein or even starch, the leftover/ unused calories are turned into fats.

  • 2. Personal Lifestyle
  • A lifestyle with no activity or exercise is a sure way of letting in overweight take charge over your life. We call such lifestyle with no activity/exercise as sedentary lifestyle and others refer to it as couch potato.

    A sedentary lifestyle can contribute to many preventable diseases which are leading causes of death in this modern day.

  • It is known that being obese and overweight can greatly affect your self esteem, and lead to cravings or poor eating habits.

    These individual resort to poor eating habits as away to comfort themselves from low self esteem. Identify your life passions or hobbies and join a club that correspond with your hobbies and get involved as they are so many, just find one!

  • 4. Emotional factors
  • Anxiety , stress or even illness for example depression can lead one to poor eating habits which leads to obesity.

There are measures one can take to combat obesity and overweight , and these includes;

- Taking charge of what you eat , like eating foods rich in high amounts of fiber such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, beans, lentils , use healthy oil such as olive or walnut and reduce sugars and saturated fats.

- Resolve to lead active life like exercising , even waking up early in the morning and doing a 30 Min workout will greatly lead you to the right path and soon you will start seeing changes.

Avoid stress and learn to appreciate life and have a positive attitude. Set some life goals that you always wanted to achieve and go for them, and there is nothing more encouraging than making progress in life. Lead a healthy life and take care of your precious body as it is the only place you have to live.
